The 2012 season was disappointing for the Chargers (7-9). General Manager A.J. Smith and coach Norv Turner were shown the door on Monday after the Bolts missed the playoffs for a third straight year and no players were selected to the Pro Bowl. Nevertheless, there were a few standouts. Here are the RapidReports picks for MVPs.

Offense -- WR Danario Alexander: Smith signed receivers Robert Meachem and Eddie Royal after he allowed WR Vincent Jackson to depart to the Buccaneers in free agency. Meachem (207, 2) and Royal (234, 0) combined for 441 yards and two TDs. Alexander recorded 37 receptions for 658 yards and seven TDs in 10 games with six starts after he was signed on Oct. 22.

Defense -- FS Eric Weddle: Weddle may have only had three interceptions, four less than in 2011 when he had a career-high of seven, but he has emerged as a leader on and off the field. Weddle’s overall stats for 2012 were superb. He had 97 tackles (83 solo, 14 assists), one sack, three INTs, a TD, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries. His teammates rewarded Weddle by voting him team MVP for the first time in his career.

Special teams -- K Nick Novak: Novak kicked for the Chargers in 2011 after Nate Kaeding tore an ACL in the season opener, but Kaeding earned his job back in training camp and Novak was released. Novak was re-signed after Kaeding suffered a groin injury during the Friday practice before playing the Chiefs in Week 4. Novak was signed the next day and went on to make 18 of 20 (90.0 percent) field goals attempted and hit all 33 of his extra point attempts. The two misses were from 55 and 54 yards. In Week 14, Novak made a 51-yard field goal against the Steelers in Pittsburgh for only the fifth 50-yard field goal or longer in the history of Heinz Field.

Newcomer -- DE Kendall Reyes: Reyes (round two, 49th overall) didn’t post huge numbers in his rookie campaign, but he showed improvement on a weekly basis and finished the season strong. Reyes played in all 16 games and made four starts. He compiled 28 tackles (16 solo, 12 assists) 5.5 sacks and one pass defensed. His best performance came against the Jets in Week 16 when he racked up five tackles (3 solo, 2 assists) and 3.5 sacks.
