Chiefs vs. Titans score: Ryan Tannehill upstages Patrick Mahomes in wild Tennessee win
The Chiefs and Titans traded blows all day, but in the end it was Tennessee that got the win
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Ryan Tannehill and the Tennessee Titans upstaged Patrick Mahomes' return to the field in Nashville, as the Titans defeated the Chiefs, 35-32, in a wild matchup.
Mahomes started off a little slow, but ended up throwing for 446 yards and three touchdowns. Derrick Henry was the main workhorse for the Titans on offense, and recorded 188 yards on the ground and scored two touchdowns. It was a back-and-forth affair that got wild in the fourth quarter.
Up five points with under two minutes left, the Chiefs were lining up to kick a field goal to extend their lead to eight. The snap was mismanaged, and the Titans got the ball near midfield with new life. Tannehill then took the Titans 61 yards down the field on four plays, and also converted the two-point conversion with his legs to take a three-point lead. Mahomes and the Chiefs quickly moved the ball downfield and set themselves up for a field goal in hopes of taking the game to overtime, but it was blocked by Joshua Kalu as time expired.
The Titans used a couple of big plays in the second half to score the upset victory, and it has become apparent that Tannehill is the answer for this team moving forward.
BLOCKED. BLOCKED. The Titans get back into the win column! Mahomes Magic is upstaged by Tannehill!
The Chiefs' field-goal unit messed up their last chance. Can't afford it here.
Great call to go for two. Basically have to at this point. The squib kick did not work, however. Probably would rather have a touchback then letting Hardman return.
Absolutely unbelievable finish here in Nashville. Is 23 ticks enough time for Mahomes?
Adam Humphries from 23-yards out! Titans take the lead with 23 seconds left!
Tannehill almost had A.J. Brown down the field. Not a bad throw there.
Tannehill tucks it and runs 18 yards down the field. He came to play today!
The center snapped it early and the holder had no choice but to throw it away. Titans take over at around their own 40-yard line. Unbelievable.
Huge break for the titans there. Oh my goodness.
It definitely looked like A.J. Brown was interfered with on that last play. Titans can't challenge the no-call because there are under two minutes left in the game. But shouldn't the booth have done something?
Even with the slip-up with Tyreek Hill earlier this drive, you have to be impressed with the Titans' DBs today. It's been tough trying to figure out a formula for what kind of coverage to run at what times against Mahomes, but that was a big stand there. Titans now down five points with three minutes remaining.
Titans refuse to go away. Derrick Henry rushes for his second touchdown of the game -- and he now has 172 yards on the ground. Huge game for him.
Ryan Tannehill is a competitor. He just picked up a first down with his feet. Nice 12-yard scramble.
This is true. Yes, Mahomes is great, but his wide receivers really are underrated. https://twitter.com/RossTucker...
63 yards. Hardman just out-ran everyone.
