Bills at Colts -- Week 12
Where: Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis (turf, indoors)
When: Sunday, 1 p.m. ET (CBS)
Spread: Colts by 3
Records: Bills (Overall: 4-6, AFC East: 1-3); Colts (Overall: 6-4, AFC South: 2-1)
Past results: Two most recent meetings -- Jan. 3, 2009: Bills 30, Colts 7; Nov. 12, 2006: Colts 17, Bills 16. Series record: Bills hold a 35-30-1 edge.
What matters: Can the Colts contain the Bills? Injuries have depleted an already shaky Colts defense, and the Patriots have drawn the blueprint for dominating the Indy D. The Bills, though, have an added dimension with an explosive run game. Fred Jackson (concussion) appears to ready to go, and C.J. Spiller is a threat to go the distance every touch. The Colts may again be without both their starting corners, which would be music to the ears of Buffalo wide receiver Steve Johnson. Still, Indy should have an easier time keeping up with the Bills than it did with the Patriots.
Who matters: QB Andrew Luck. Moreso than anything else, the Colts success depends on the rookie quarterback. When he's going good he puts a ton of pressure on the opposing defense, which opens up running lanes for running backs Vick Ballard and Donald Brown. If he's off, however, the run game isn't strong enough to stand on its own. This game could very well be a shootout, and if Luck's going good, you have to like Indy's chances.
Key matchups: Colts secondary vs. Buffalo receivers. More specifically, Vontae Davis or Darius Butler against Steve Johnson. Davis may be out -- he's questionable with a sprained knee -- but it doesn't really matter who's lined up against Johnson, they have to keep him contained. If Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick is having success through the air, Buffalo backs Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller will have a whole lot more room to run. Otherwise, the Bills will be forced into being one-dimensional. Something the Colts D failed to make the New England offense last week.
Injuries of note: Both cornerback Vontae Davis (knee) and Coby Fleener (shoulder) were limited participants in Thursday's practice. Running back Donald Brown (knee) was held out completely. Coach Bruce Arians hasn't ruled anyone out as of yet.
Inside stuff: The re-signing of tight end Dominique Jones may signal that Fleener will not be able to go Sunday. The Colts offense takes a bit of a hit without Fleener, as he's a better downfield receiver than fellow tight end Dwayne Allen. Fleener hasn't played since the end of last month.
Connections: Bills tight ends coach Pete Metzelaars and secondary coach George Catavolos both spent several years with the Colts primarily in the '80s and '90s.
Stat you should know: The Colts are fourth in the NFL in total yards per game (393.4), while the Bills are 27th in yards allowed per game (387.4).
Record watch: With a 100-yard receiving game, T.Y. Hilton will become the first Colts rookie in history to achieve such a feat. Andre Rison had three in 1989.
Looking ahead: With each win, the Colts get closer and closer to securing a playoff spot. After Sunday, Indy heads to Detroit before returning home to face the Titans. Three very winnable games.
Prediction: Colts 34, Bills 21
