The Indianapolis Colts were off Wednesday, but plenty of news and analysis was still available.
Andrew Luck v. Peyton Manning...again: It's inevitable, and perhaps necessary, that rookie quarterback Andrew Luck be constantly scrutinized and compared to his predecessor, Peyton Manning. Luck was, after all, brought in to replace Manning in Indianapolis. Here's a (fairly) level-headed analysis of the two, via Stampede Blue. There's really nothing to disagree with there. Luck certainly looks the part.
So this is kind of weird: After four years of success at Western Michigan, Colts OL Joe Reitz left his name etched in the record books. Except, not in the football record books. Reitz played basketball at WMU, and never a down of football until NFL training camp with the Baltimore Ravens in 2008 when he stared down all-pro linebacker Ray Lewis, which, one could imagine, would have to be somewhat of a culture shock. The Indianapolis Star has his crazy story.
The preseason draws nigh: More on Luck as he prepares for his first career preseason game. His teammates will be there, too, but no one seems all that concerned about them.
Brazill looks for playing time Sunday: LaVon Brazill has impressed the Colts coaching staff early in training camp, and he has earned himself kick and punt return duties. But with WR Donnie Avery out (thigh bruise) for Sunday's preseason opener against the St. Louis Rams, Brazill has a chance to prove his mettle as a wide receiver.
Oh yeah, defense: Here's a solid explanation of what to expect from an Indianapolis defense that was not really effective a season ago, via the Associated Press. Not only is the personnel different, but it will be strange for Colts fans to see Robert Mathis and Dwight Freeney without their hands on the turf.
