The Indianapolis Colts made a couple of roster moves Tuesday, waiving linebacker Larry Lumpkin and trading for cornerback Josh Gordy.

Lumpkin was a member of a crowded linebacking corps, and he was never able to make up much ground. His release paved the way for Gordy, who will provide more depth to an uncertain defensive backfield.

The Colts have spent the last few months looking for a corner opposite Jerraud Powers, having picked up Cassius Vaughn, DJ Johnson, Justing King and Korey Lindsey through various channels. They now add Gordy, a nine-game starter for the St. Louis Rams last season, in exhange for a 2014 draft pick. Before St. Louis, Gordy had a brief stint with the Green Bay Packers.

It's difficult not to look at this situation and conclude that the front office is not pleased with corner play to this point, and bringing in Gordy certainly sends that message to the DBs fighting for a roster spot.

Depending on who is to be believed, Collie has three or four concussions in his career, most recently Sunday night. Here's an interesting -- though hardly definitive -- statement from Dr. Vernon B. Williams, medical director of the Kerlan-Jobe Center for Sports Neurology in Los Angeles:

“There are people who can have multiple concussions and, in between, everything is normal and they seem to kind of reset and they don’t have this progressive worsening and duration or severity. On the other hand, there are others who do. It’s hard to kind of predict. You kind of have to look at the pattern of the individual athlete.”

There's still so much uncertainty in this situation, and, obviously, the decision will ultimately be Collie's or the Colts'.

Room for Griff? Undrafted rookie wide receiver Griff Whalen made quite a debut Sunday night, snagging a touchdown catch to go along with three others for a total of 59 yards. Head coach Chuck Pagano certainly took notice: “We’re seeing the same things out of Griff that we saw collegiately,” Pagano told Colts.com.  “He knows how to get open.  He has great hands.  He’s very smart.  He understands the offense, so he’s not out there thinking.  He’s able to play fast.” 

Whalen is still an outsider to make the squad, but with uncertainty surrounding Collie and veteran Donnie Avery yet to play a down due to a hip injury, Whalen has made the most of his opportunity.
