The Cowboys were already down at starting safety for this week’s game. Now they’ll be down a starter for the rest of the season.
Strong safety Barry Church is expected to miss the rest of the season with an Achilles injury he sustained in the second quarter.
“It’s very disappointing,” said Church, who was on crutches in the locker room. “I was excited about being out there this year and trying to help us win games. I’m still going to be here giving my all, but I’ll just have to do it from the sidelines."
The Cowboys were already without starting free safety Gerald Sensabaugh, who missed all week with a strained calf. Actually, Church was also injured this week with a quad injury that kept him out of the second half last Sunday in Seattle.
But Church practiced all week and was expected to give the Cowboys at least one starter in the deep secondary.
The Cowboys used cornerback Brandon Carr at safety in the nickel package. By the end of the game, Carr and backup safeties Mana Silva and Danny McCray.
Carr said he is willing to do more at safety if the Cowboys indeed ask him to make that a permanent move.
"I’ve said before … I’m a team player and that’s what that means,” Carr said. “Whatever they ask me to do, I’ll do it and I’ll do the best I can to prepare and be ready for it. It’s a big adjustment. (Playing) cornerback is so fast in there and you see things differently at safety. But if that’s what I’ll be doing, I think I’ll be fine.”
