In quite the shocking bit of news, Cowboys tight end Jason Witten is active for Wednesday night's game against the Giants.

Earlier on Wednesday, there was a report that Witten wanted to try and sign a waiver in order to get on the field due to the fact that he suffered a lacerated spleen just a few weeks ago. Cowboys VP Stephen Jones shrugged that off and said it was "not in the cards."

“That's news to me,'' Jones told radio station 105.3 The Fan. "No, that's not in the cards.''

It sure seemed like Witten would end up missing the game and not risking a potentially more devastating injury as a result.

Perhaps it was a coincidence, but Witten's teammate Marcus Spears tweeted out a quick message shortly after the Dallas inactives were announced.

Witten's presence is certainly a huge boost for Tony Romo, as the tight end serves as his primary target in the intermediate passing area, and is typically one of the better safety valves in the NFL when the Giants inevitably get pressure on Romo.

But how effective can he really be? Witten suffered a lacerated spleen just a few weeks ago, and even though he didn't require surgery, he was the definition of a game-time decision because he was still dealing with the injury. It's possible the Cowboys will simply use him more as a decoy than anything else, and hope he opens up an already banged up secondary for Miles Austin and Dez Bryant.

Or maybe it's possible that Witten is one of the tougher human beings on the planet.
