While there have been many questions about Tony Romo ’s ability to bounce back this Sunday from a five-interception performance in the last game, he could have some added duties again this week.
With the injury concerns at punter with both Chris Jones (knee) and Brian Moorman (groin), the Cowboys not only need to figure out the punter, but the holder, too. Jones and Moorman have held for Dan Bailey this week. And since both are not practicing, Romo has received a few snaps in the special-teams period.
“There’s a possibility Tony’s going to hold,” coach Jason Garrett said Thursday.
Romo added: “I’ll be ready” when asked about being the holder.
And he should be, considering this would be the fourth time in his career the Cowboys have gone back to Romo. His infamous botched hold in the 2006 playoffs in Seattle is what is remembered most about Romo as a holder.
However, he has been the most consistent of the holders the Cowboys have used over the last few years, including punters Mat McBriar, along with Jones and Moorman.
Garrett said backup quarterback Kyle Orton is another possibility to hold but made it sound like Romo would be the clear first option.
While Moorman is not expected to play, the Cowboys are holding out hope on Jones, who has a sprained knee. Even if he punts, there is a good chance the club would keep him upright and not have him hold for kicks, making Romo the option either way.
