The Eagles are loaded at defensive end, but when one of their starters went down with an injury, it was one of the big guys in middle who replaced him – DT Cullen Jenkins has been running with the first team at DE, taking over for Jason Babin, who is out indefinitely with a calf strain.
“I kind of like that, to be able to move around and bounce around,’’ Jenkins said. “Maybe I can play end some and you get to run or go back inside to pass rush. Just go to different spots and whatever is needed because you never know the situation. You may be deep at one spot and then have an injury in another spot and you’ll be needed in that spot."
Still, the Eagles have two high-priced DEs on their roster – Brandon Graham, a first-round pick in 2010, and Vinny Curry, a second-round pick in 2012. So, it raised eyebrows when Jenkins was moved to DE ahead of them., as well as holdovers Darryl Tapp and Phillip Hunt.
Some players might not like the extra work it takes to play more than one position, but Jenkins isn’t one of them, especially now that the other starting DE, Trent Cole, will miss about a week with a sore shoulder.
“I just like to be able to bounce around and be able to play wherever I’m needed,” Jenkins said.
