Heading into the final two preseason games, the Miami Dolphins have several key position battles. The receiver position is a total question mark after starters Legedu Naanee and Davone Bess. An offensive line position likely opened up after guard Eric Steinbach announced his retirement on Wednesday. On defense, there are several reserve spots on the defensive line that are up for grabs.
After a 6-10 season last year Miami is looking to rebuild and mostly younger players are competing for fringe spots on the roster. However, here are three veterans who are in danger of losing their roster spot:
- Brian Hartline (WR, fourth year, 23 starts for the Dolphins) -- The former Ohio State star has battled injuries throughout his career but was expected to get a chance at a starting job under new coach Joe Philbin. However, Hartline has been sidelined since the start of OTAs with a myriad of injuries. He has yet to practice in offensive coordinator Mike Sherman’s new attack. Many consider him above release, but he is fodder for the PUP list at best right now.
- Jamaal Westerman (LB, fourth year, no starts for the Dolphins) -- Westerman played a big role with the New York Jets last season, as he worked his way into the starting lineup to record 32 tackles with 3.5 sacks while battling a groin injury. However, in the 4-3 defense in Miami he is struggling at defensive end and has dropped to third on the depth chart. With established veterans in the starting lineup and rookies dominating the second team his job is in jeopardy.
- John Jerry (G, third year, three starts for the Dolphins) -- The former third-round draft pick out of Mississippi didn’t help himself in training camp by showing up around 20 pounds overweight and throwing up during practice. He may garner a roster spot after guard Eric Steinbach retired. That, and the fact they don’t grow 6-foot-5, 350-pounders on trees is in his favor. Jerry is listed on the third team.
