Jets at Dolphins -- Week 3
Where: Sun Life Stadium, Miami Gardens, Fla. (outdoors, grass)
Forecast: Scattered thunderstorms, low-80s
When: Sunday, 1 p.m. ET (CBS)
Spread: Jets by 1
2012 records: Dolphins (1-1, AFC East: 0-0); Jets (1-1, AFC East: 1-0)
Past results: Two most recent meetings -- Jan. 1, 2012: Dolphins 19, Jets 17; Oct. 17, 2011: Jets 24, Dolphins 6. Series record: Jets lead 48-44-1.
What matters: The Dolphins earned their first win of the season by demolishing the Raiders, 35-13 last week. The team ran the ball behind reigning AFC Offensive Player of the Week RB Reggie Bush to pull away in the second half. If they can run against the Jets, they could get an early lead in the AFC East division race.
Who matters: Bush asserted himself as one of the top rushers in the league by torching the Raiders with a variety of highlights. The former Southern Cal star amassed 172 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries to go with three catches for 25 yards against Oakland. Safety Reshad Jones continues to develop into an elite player. The third-year player has 10 tackles this season and made the team’s first interception when he stepped in front of a pass from Raiders QB Carson Palmer last week.
Key matchups: CB Sean Smith has struggled at times this year and was slowed by an injury last week against Oakland. He has six tackles and two passes defensed and will be counted on to slow Jets WR Santonio Holmes. The mercurial pass catcher has seven receptions for 96 yards with a touchdown this season.
Injuries of note: LB Kevin Burnett (foot), WR Marlon Moore (hamstring) and DT Tony McDaniel (knee) all missed practice Thursday while WR Anthony Armstrong (hamstring) and CB Richard Marshall (back) were limited.
Inside stuff: Does it get better than the Dolphins defensive line? Tackles Paul Soliai and Randy Starks man the middle while ends Jared Odrick and Cameron Wake apply the pressure. The unit, which has both the team’s sacks this season, is fourth in the league in rushing defense, allowing just 53 yards per game on the ground.
Stat you should know: Dolphins TE Anthony Fasano has been a Jets killer during his career. The former Notre Dame star has 26 catches for 248 yards with four touchdowns in nine games against New York. Fasano caught a 14-yard scoring pass last week and is getting hot in the team’s new offense.
Looking ahead: The Dolphins have a chance to turn a win over the Raiders into a winning streak with a victory over the Jets. And if Miami gets hot, who can cool them off? Look at the upcoming slate: the Cardinals, Bengals, Rams, Jets again, Colts, Titans and Bills are the next seven games. Miami could be favored in each matchup and become one of the league’s biggest stories.
Prediction: Dolphins 23, Jets 19
