Carson Palmer, Sam Bradford, Kevin Kolb, Mark Sanchez. What do these quarterbacks have in common? Each has thrown for more than 300 yards against the Miami Dolphins this season.

“We’ve got to continue to keep making more plays on the ball down the field, but, overall, I think the yardage is too much,” Dolphins defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle said. “We’re not excited about that. I mentioned last week the completion percentage is solid. I think we’re about fifth in the league in terms of completions against us, so that’s good. We’d like to get more turnovers and like to contest more balls.”

The Dolphins allowed Bradford to throw for 315 yards in a 17-14 win and again struggled against the deep ball. Bradford completed throws of at least 20 yards to five different receivers, including a 65-yard run-and-catch to WR Brandon Gibson.

However, Coyle praised the growth of DBs Nolan Carroll (six tackles) and Jimmy Wilson (four tackles) as CB Sean Smith (five tackles, one pass defended) continues to emerge as one of the better players at his position in the league.

Miller time: Lamar Miller was the No. 2 running back against the St. Louis Rams on Sunday, but he didn’t even touch the ball. In fact, the closest Miller came to putting his mitts on the ball was when he almost recovered a fumble on the punt coverage unit during the first half.

However, Dolphins coach Joe Philbin said the reason for Miller's lack of role in the offense was due to the team running fewer than 50 plays and struggling to generate long drives. Overall, the Dolphins finished with a mere 18 carries.

“I think what happened was (that) we only ran 48 plays that counted in the game,” Philbin said. “Usually we are up in the 70s, so I don’t think that Reggie ever got gassed enough to get another back in there enough. That’s probably what happened.” 

Offensive coordinator Mike Sherman added that Miller’s lack of experience in pass protection wasn't a reason for his non-existent role.

“I think he's getting better at it, and I don’t lack confidence in his ability to do that," he said. "That’s not a reason why he didn’t play the other day.”
