Miami Dolphins WR Legedu Naanee’s first catch with the Dolphins last weekend will likely be his last.
The team cut Naanee on Tuesday two days after the veteran made his first reception -- and fumble -- in a 24-21 overtime loss at Arizona. Naanee was signed as a free agent last spring.
Miami signed free agent WR Jabar Gaffney to take Naanee’s spot on the active roster.
The former second-round pick in the 2002 draft is coming off a career season in Washington where he established personal bests in receptions (68), receiving yards (947) and tied a career high with five touchdowns. Overall, Gaffney has played in 155 games with 103 starts and has caught 443 passes for 5,622 yards with 24 touchdowns.
The team also cut DL Andre Fluellen and waived/injured LB Mike Rivera.
Blitz issues: Dolphins coach Joe Philbin wasn’t pleased with the performance of his offensive line in the loss to Arizona.
“Not good enough,” he said of allowing four sacks. “I would say it wasn’t good enough. Our protection wasn’t good enough. We watched the Eagles game (the week before), I had commented that the way that game started for Philadelphia, you knew it was going to be a difficult day because of the way they knocked Michael Vick around. No, it wasn’t good enough.”
The Dolphins have one of the top offensive lines in the league with tackles Jake Long and Jonathan Martin, guards John Jerry and Richie Incognito and center Mike Pouncey. However, the group struggled against Arizona’s various blitzes and tired as the game wore on.
“We’ve got to do a better job of recognizing (blitzes),” Philbin said. “I could stand up here and tell you we have a mechanism to get that blitz picked up. But until you do it on a tape or in a game then it’s just a bunch of talk. So yeah we’ve got to do a better job.”
Vote for wins: Dolphins owner Stephen Ross isn’t shy about where he spends his money -- on and off the field.
Ross has donated more money to the Presidential campaign of candidate Mitt Romney than any other NFL owner, according to a report by The Washington Examiner.
Ross has donated $100,000 to the pro-Romney super PAC, Restore Our Future, $20,800 to the Republican National Committee, $5,000 to Romney’s Free and Strong America PAC and $2,500 to Mitt Romney. Owners of the Cowboys, Browns, Chiefs, Jaguars, Jets, Dolphins, Texans, Chargers, Redskins, Bengals and Cardinals also have contributed to Romney.
Overall, NFL political donations favor Republicans over Democrats three-to-one.
