The Dolphins opened training camp at the team facility on the Nova Southeastern University campus in Davie on Friday morning on a steamy, 90-degree morning with the players taking the field in shorts, shoulder pads and helmets. It is the 20th time the facility has hosted training camp as players reported on Thursday for physicals and a conditioning test. Players also have been buzzing about offseason renovations to the facility, as several million dollars were spent on upgrades to the locker room, weight room, film rooms and hallways.
Who’s here: Running backs Reggie Bush and Daniel Thomas took the majority of the snaps with the first-team offense but Steve Slaton also had his fair share of reps. Slaton is a sleeper who could excel in the zone blocking scheme – the same scheme he flourished in during his college years at West Virginia. Quarterback Matt Moore took the majority of the reps with the first team, but David Garrard also had a chance with the starters. The defensive line, which is shifting to a 4-3 front, consisted of defensive ends Jared Odrick and Cameron Wake and tackles Randy Starks and Paul Soliai.
Who’s not: Rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill was a no-show as he continues to negotiate his deal. The No. 8 overall pick in April’s draft remained far apart on his deal and missed practice on Friday. It’s probably not the way he wanted to celebrate his 24th birthday as he missed reps that went to Moore, Garrard and Pat Devlin. Running back Jonas Gray, who is recovering from a torn ACL, was the only other player absent.
