You may have noticed that Eagles coach Chip Kelly likes to do things differently, and apparently, that includes cuts.
Philadelphia announced on Saturday that the team has trimmed its roster down from 90 to 76 players, making the Eagles the first team to officially announce any major cuts.
Like all teams, the Eagles have until Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET to get their roster down to 75 players. Kelly said there were several reasons for making the cuts three days early.
"It's not beneficial to have guys practice who won't play," Kelly said.
The early moves are also beneficial to the players who got released because they'll now have an extra three days to find another team to sign with.
The most notable cuts were probably Jake Knott and Alejandro Villanueva. Knott played in a total of 12 games last season, with most of his contributions coming on specials teams. Not helping Knott's cause at all is the fact that he has to sit out the first four games of the season because of a suspension.
As for Villanueva, he was a long shot to make the team, but as a former U.S. Army Ranger, he made headlines when he signed with Philly in May.
Actually, the most notable aspect of the Eagles cuts might have been who they didn't cut. All nine former Oregon players are still on the team, meaning 11.8 percent of the Eagles roster is currently made up of former Ducks.
