Eagles FS Colt Anderson, talking here with coach Andy Reid, may have won the starting job. (US Presswire) |
The initial plan was for Philadelphia Eagles free safety Colt Anderson to replace Kurt Coleman for one game while Coleman’s bruised sternum healed. That turned into two games and now it looks like it will turn into the rest of the season.
Eagles coach Andy Reid said on Friday that Anderson has played well enough at free safety to keep the starting job, even though Coleman, who has started 25 games the last two seasons, is now healthy enough to play again.
“I think you could say that,’’ Reid said. “I haven’t sat down and talked with Todd [Bowles, the defensive coordinator] about that, but I would tell you that he’s played good football -- good enough to consider keeping him in that position.”
Anderson had five tackles and knocked away a pass in the end zone during Thursday night’s 34-13 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, and he seemed to always be in the right place at the right time, which has been a problem for the Eagles’ safeties this season.
Vick is ready, McCoy still waits: QB Michael Vick has been cleared to play in the Eagles next game, Dec. 23 vs. Washington, but RB LeSean McCoy still hasn’t seen the independent neurologist who must clear him before he can play. Both players have missed recent games because of concussions.
Reid said McCoy will probably see the independent neurologist on Tuesday and if he passes that final hurdle, he’ll be in uniform against the Redskins. And, unlike Vick, McCoy will reclaim his starting job from the rookie who replaced him, Bryce Brown.
Injury report: CB Brandon Hughes has a lung contusion from Thursday night’s game. Hughes went home after the game and began to cough up blood, so he was taken to the hospital for observation and spent the night there, then was released on Friday morning. Reid said Hughes is fine now and he’ll be evaluated again next week.
Also, G Evan Mathis has swelling in an ankle, TE Clay Harbor has a lower back contusion and FB Stanley Havili has a hamstring strain. The Eagles don’t play again for nine days, and Reid said all of the injured players should be ready by then.
Asomugha nominated for Bart Starr Award: Eagles CB Nnamdi Asomugha is one of 10 nominees for the Bart Starr Award, which honors one NFL player each year for outstanding character and leadership in the home, on the field and in the community.
