A pattern has developed over the course of the Eagles’ season and it’s this: When the games mean the most, the Eagles play their worst. That was true again in Monday night’s 28-13 loss to the New Orleans Saints, when the Eagles’ offense had the ball inside the Saints’ 20-yard line five times, including first-and-goal four times, and managed just six points while turning the ball over twice.

On the other side of the ball, the Eagles' defense once again failed to come up with a big stop when it really needed it and the poor tackling throughout the game, especially by the secondary, was embarrassing. The Eagles are now 3-5 and their season is spinning out of control.

Offense: D

They had to play with a makeshift offensive line, low-lighted by the terrible play of RT Demetress Bell and RG Dennis Kelly, but that’s not a good enough excuse for their poor play. In fact, this grade would have been an F if not for the terrific game played by RB LeSean McCoy, who rushed for 119 yards and averaged 6.3 yards per carry. The Eagles had the ball inside the Saints’ 10-yard line four times and ended up with just a couple of field goals. And they didn’t just fail inside the red zone, they failed miserably, turning the ball over twice, one on an interception that was returned for a TD. Give QB Michael Vick extra credit for guts considering the pounding he took -- he was sacked seven times -- but the bottom line is that the Eagles managed just 13 points against a Saints defense that came into game giving up 31 points per game. Defense: D

The Eagles finally came up with a couple of sacks and a big turnover, and it’s no disgrace to give up a lot of passing yards to Drew Brees and the Saints’ high-powered offense. But the Eagles allowed the Saints to run the ball down their throats and there’s no excuse for the poor tackling that allowed the Saints -- who came into the game ranked 31st in the NFL in rushing -- to run for 140 yards and an average of 5.6 yards per carry. As has been the case many times this season, the defense played well for much of the game, but fell down when the team really needed a stop. Previous game’s grade: D-

Special teams: B

This unit finally came up with a big play, when RB Chris Polk stripped the ball loose on a kickoff return. That’s the kind of spark that special teams need to give to this team more often. And they almost pulled off a great trick play on a kickoff return, so they get extra points for creativity. Plus, coverage was tight and kicker Alex Henery made both of his field-goal attempts. So, you can’t blame these guys for this one. Previous game's grade: D

Coaching: D

This is a bottom line business and the men who run this team lost another game. The Eagles’ game plan wasn’t bad, but the Eagles could never find a way to protect Vick, and despite all the weapons the coaches have at their disposal, the Eagles still just managed to score 13 points against the worst defense in the league. The Eagles continue to make the same mistakes and get beat for the same reasons and ultimately, that falls on the shoulders of Andy Reid and his staff. Maybe they could fire Juan Castillo again.
