Eagles rookie guard Dennis Kelly will play in his second NFL game on Monday night against the New Orleans Saints. His first game was last weekend, and he says, "I did a lot of things right." (US Presswire) |
Philadelphia Eagles rookie guard Dennis Kelly went over the game film carefully, and when he was finished he realized he was smiling.
“There were plenty of things I did wrong and I know I have to correct them,’’ Kelly said. “But I also did a lot of things right. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised with how I played, all things considered.”
Kelly played in his first NFL game last week against Atlanta, replacing injured Danny Watkins at right guard. And now it appears Kelly will play in his second game when Philadelphia plays the New Orleans Saints on Monday night. Watkins didn’t practice on Thursday or Friday and coach Andy Reid said Watkins probably won’t play on Monday night.
“It’s going to (be a) struggle for him to make it this game,’’ Reid said. “He’s hurting right now. This is going to be a fight for him to get into the game.”
As for Kelly, a fifth-round draft pick from Purdue who was inactive for the first six games, Reid gave him a thumbs-up for his debut against the Falcons.
“Actually, Kelly did a pretty good job,’’ Reid said. “That was a respectable job that he did, in particular with his first start and for going against a really good player [Falcons defensive tackle Peria Jerry].
“Can he do things better?’’ Reid added. “Yeah, he will. He’s a rookie. He’ll get better. I thought he did a nice a job."
So did Kelly. In fact, he’s already thinking about keeping the starting job even when Watkins is healthy again.
“Hopefully, if I keep playing at a high level they’ll give me a spot,’’ he said.
Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg also praised the job Kelly did in his first game, but cautioned that things will be more difficult in his second.
"Now people have some film on him,'' Mornhinweg said, "so this week is a great challenge for him."
