The Falcons trimmed their roster to 75 before Monday’s deadline and will have one more opportunity -- Thursday’s final exhibition game at Jacksonville -- to make decisions on a number of players. All teams need to be down to 53 players by Aug. 31.
The Falcons were sitting at 77 before waiving QB John Parker Wilson and assigning DT Corey Peters to the non-football related injury list. Peters will be eligible to return to the active roster after six weeks.
Most of the players who were dismissed were underperforming in preseason games or hampered by injuries. A few players, such as defensive tackle Elisha Joseph and cornerback Darrin Walls, reached injury settlements with the team.
Noteable cuts: QB John Parker Wilson (4th year, undrafted, Alabama) -- The quarterback competition is the most high-profile position battle for every team and it’s also the easiest to judge. Based off of Wilson’s limited action throughout three preseason games, it was fairly certain that he wasn’t going to survive the first round of cuts. It didn’t help that rookie free agent QB Dominique Davis surged throughout the preseason and took many of Wilson’s snaps; TE Chase Coffman (4th year, 3rd round, Missouri) -- Coffman was once a highly touted prospect after winning the John Mackey Award, given to the nation’s top tight end. He had 247 receptions and 30 touchdowns in college but a broken foot and various other injuries derailed his career.
Complete cut list
LB Max Gruder (rookie free agent, Pittsburgh); K Erik Folk (1st year, undrafted, Washington); Richard Medlin (2nd year, undrafted, Fayetteville State); FB Lee Meisner (1st year, undrafted, Colorado State- Pueblo); DE Louis Nzegwu (1st year, undrafted, Wisconsin); WR Kenny Stafford (1st year, undrafted, Toledo); TE Aron White (1st year, undrafted, Georgia).
