Monday is rapidly becoming the New York Giants’ day to discuss injuries in the secondary.
This week’s topic was safety Kenny Phillips, who suffered an MCL sprain during the Giants’ 19-17 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night.
Coach Tom Coughlin said that, like right tackle David Diehl, Phillips’ MCL sprain will be a “week to week” issue.
“Naturally, he’s upset about it,” safety Antrel Rolle said. “It’s still unfortunate, but we’ve got to keep his spirits high and let him know everything is going to be OK, we’re going to hold it down until he gets back. We know it’s going to be a big loss for our defense. But we’re going to do the best we can to keep things moving and try to get back on a positive track and stay on a positive track.”
Surprisingly, there were a few positive pieces of news for the Giants secondary on Monday. Yes, cornerbacks Corey Webster (broken right hand), Prince Amukamara (high-ankle sprain) and Michael Coe (hamstring) are all playing hurt, and Jayron Hosley is out with a hamstring issue. But Coughlin was pleased with the way Stevie Brown played in place of Phillips and safety Tyler Sash returned from his four-game suspension for violating the league’s policy on performance enhancing drugs.
“He did a nice job coming into the game,” Coughlin said. “He did some good things. He left a couple of things on the field, but by and large, for a guy who had to be pressed into action as early as he did, I think he fit in very well.”
Even though Brown is new to the Giants, Coughlin said the fourth-year safety didn’t cause the defense to alter its strategy “to a great extent.” Brown finished the game with seven tackles, which was more than any Giant besides middle linebacker Chase Blackburn.
Coughlin went on to say he expects Sash to be in good shape because the second-year safety knew he’d be coming back from suspension this week. To his credit, Sash said he has spent the last four weeks training in Miami and in his hometown in Iowa.
Sash did have an ankle injury at the end of the preseason, but he says it’s no longer a problem and he’s “ready to go.”
When asked how long it would take him to get into football shape, Sash said, “Hopefully by Sunday,” which is when the Giants host the Cleveland Browns.
The Giants have the rest of the week to activate Sash and make a roster move, and he is allowed to practice before any of that takes place.
