Giants coach Tom Coughlin didn’t try to hide his frustration with the special teams on Wednesday. The usually reliable kicking game has gone south over the last three games, all of which included a missed attempt from K Lawrence Tynes.

“Well, we’ve missed a field goal in each of the last three games and the one the other day that would’ve made it 7-3,” Coughlin said of Sunday's loss. “Who knows what will happen from that. I know I was disappointed in that.”

Coughlin, however, was careful not to put a label on whatever it is that Tynes is going through.

“I don’t know if you’d call it a slump,” Coughlin said. “There’s been a different reason in each case. We thought his timing wasn’t very good the other day on the one that we missed, but it’s the time of the year we can’t afford any misses. We need to be able to come away with points each and every time we’re down there.”

Tynes wasn’t interested in picking apart each kick on Wednesday, but he did agree that the Giants kicking unit had grown “sloppy” in recent weeks.

“It’s kind of the peaks and valleys of a season,” Tynes said. “We had 13 good games and the last two have not been up to par to what we expect out of ourselves and us as a unit. So we've got to build on what we did today in practice and we've got to make them. Make all of them.”

Tynes was having a brilliant year before, making all but three attempts (including a 50-yarder) before December. He said through self-scouting the Giants have been able to pick up on some issues that he feels are already in the process of being eliminated.

And as for the word “slump,” Tynes agreed that term is reserved for baseball players.

“I think I made like 18 out of 19 at pregame,” Tynes said of Sunday, when he missed a 30-yard attempt in the loss to the Falcons. “If you're in a slump you're probably not kicking real well at all during the week or at practice, so I feel like we are doing that.

"I just feel like maybe our game tempo is a little off. I think we've fixed that earlier this week, and today at practice we did some team stuff so you just got to be positive moving forward. You can't really dwell on the past.”

Tynes likes LS Zak DeOssie and P/holder Steve Weatherford’s ability to assess themselves, which is why he believes the Giants will turn things around in Baltimore against the Ravens this Sunday.

He doesn’t have a lot of experience at kicking M&T Bank Stadium, but the field turf is similar to that of MetLife Stadium, so Tynes doesn’t anticipate it will be “much more difficult.”
