Will the Giants have running back Ahmad Bradshaw when they face the Eagles in Philadelphia in Week 4? (US Presswire) |
Coach Tom Coughlin is hopeful that running back Ahmad Bradshaw will be cleared for the Giants’ Week 4 matchup with the Eagles in Philadelphia, but any injury involving a player’s neck requires patience.
Bradshaw and right tackle David Diehl (knee) were among a group of Giants players that went for tests at the Hospital for Special Surgery on Manhattan’s Upper East Side on Monday. Coughlin didn’t have any specifics on those tests, but he did paint a brighter picture for some players than for others.
For instance, Coughlin said if it were a matter of pain management for Bradshaw, he’d be playing on Sunday night. The problem is that it’s not just a pain issue.
“There are still issues, yeah,” Coughlin said.
Coughlin said Diehl is “kind of the same way,” but he added that if he can make progress, Diehl could return this week. Diehl’s injury was originally reported to be an MCL sprain, but Coughlin has since stopped giving specifics about injuries, instead choosing to just name the injured body part (knee, neck, wrist, etc.).
Coughlin said wide receiver Hakeem Nicks, who missed Thursday’s win over the Carolina Panthers, will be limited to one day of practice per week as his surgically repaired right foot continues to improve. Nicks will likely practice Thursday this week, but that could change as the season, and his foot, progress.
Nicks said if the Giants played the Panthers on Sunday instead of Thursday, he would have been able to play, but the short turnaround meant there was a risk he could aggravate the injury.
“I don’t think it was a setback,” he said. “It was more a cautious situation where it was too quick of a turnaround.”
Corey Webster will play with cast: After returning from a broken hand to finish the Week 3 win, Webster practiced with a massive cast on his right hand on Monday.
“Well, obviously very cumbersome in practice,” Coughlin said. “That’s because they are overboard with the safety issue as far as practice goes. I’m expecting that it won’t be quite that way at game time. The cast will be smaller.”
Phillips said he thinks Webster will be just as effective with the cast and hopes to see the veteran pick off a pass this Sunday.
With Webster battling the hand injury, that leaves Justin Tryon as the team's only healthy cornerback. Prince Amukamara is still recovering from a high ankle sprain, while Michael Coe and Jayron Hosley each have hamstring issues.
The team lost Terrell Thomas (knee) before the season and he has since been placed on IR.
Kenny Phillips will appeal his fine: After getting slapped with a $30,000 fine for a Week 2 hit on Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver Vincent Jackson, Phillips posted a picture of the collision in his locker at the team’s facility in East Rutherford.
“Look at the picture,” Phillips said to CBSSports.com. “I didn’t touch him. They didn’t say anything.” The picture doesn’t reveal any helmet-to-helmet contact and Phillips doesn’t think he launched himself either.
“This man is 6-5, 225,” Phillips said of Jackson. “I’m 6-2, 210. Of course when I hit him, I’m gonna come up. What do you expect?”
Phillips was fined at least twice last year (he said it was more, but we only have records of two instances) and when asked how he was feeling on Monday, Phillips responded, “broke.”
Phillips is appealing and hopes to get an explanation for the fine during that process. A verdict on the appeal could come later this week.
Domenik Hixon cleared: The veteran wide receiver missed Thursday’s game after suffering a concussion in Week 2, but he has been cleared and hopes to practice Wednesday.
Buccaneers linebacker Mason Foster was fined $21,000 for the hit (he pulled off Hixon’s helmet from behind” which is interesting because the two actually train together in the offseason.
When asked if he thought it was a dirty hit, Hixon said he was “already down” but stopped himself short. “It is what it is.”
High praise for Prince Amukamara: Amukamara is still working his way back from a high ankle sprain, but he looked solid against the Panthers on Thursday.
“It’s just confidence,” Phillips said. “He’s starting to believe he’s a great player, and he is. He’s getting over his injuries, so that’s allowing him to play faster and he definitely already understands the defense, so the sky’s the limit for him.”
Who didn’t practice Monday: In addition to Nicks, Diehl, Hixon and Bradshaw, cornerbacks Hosley (hamstring) and Coe (hamstring), linebacker Keith Rivers (hamstring) and safety Antrel Rolle (knee) did not work on Monday.
Rolle’s injury is supposedly not serious (a laceration and some bruising) but Hosley’s hamstring could keep him out of Wednesday’s practice.
Hosley told CBSSports.com that they emphasis is on not rushing back.
