The Giants should be adding to the roster on Monday. The team announced it had released safety Janzen Jackson on Sunday night, which presumably means someone will be signed Monday.
It’s not certain who the Giants will sign, but general manager Jerry Reese could be looking to add depth at safety, offensive tackle, center or punt returner.
New York muffed two punts in its first preseason game and second-year punt returner Jerrel Jernigan botched another one at practice on Sunday. Former Giants returner Will Blackmon is still a free agent and he can also serve in several other capacities on special teams and defense.
Safety Tyler Sash will be suspended for the first four games of the season for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances, which means former Giants safety Deon Grant is another possibility. Also, with the loss of Terrell Thomas (knee), the Giants might add a defensive back who can play nickelback.
The Giants are also dealing with injuries at offensive tackle (both Will Beatty and James Brewer are having back problems) and at defensive tackle, where Shaun Rogers, Rocky Bernard and Chris Canty (PUP) all have knee issues.
Center Jim Cordle's knee swelled up after Friday's game, and since he's the only backup center with any experience in the offense, the team might be looking for some help in that area as well.
