The Patriots placed veteran RG Brian Waters on the reserve/did not report list Wednesday, according to the Boston Globe.
Why he didn't report to training camp is unknown and Waters, 35, refused comment to the newspaper.
"At this moment, I’m not really discussing the situation," Waters told the Globe. "Right now I’m just handling things between me and the team. If they want to talk to you, that’s fine, but I’m not really talking about it. I’m allowing them to handle all the media stuff right now. We’re going to do it this way, because it’s the best way to do it."
Waters, who was excused from offseason practice because of personal issues, could have been given permission to report late by the Patriots and has been ordered not to discuss it.
Retirement doesn't seem likely from his comments. The other option is he's not happy with his $1.4 million contract this season, but sources have indicated that is not a concern.
Waters wasn't signed until after training camp last season (Sept. 4) and delivered a Pro-Bowl performance. If Waters doesn't return, the Patriots have options. The most likely would be moving center Dan Connolly back to right guard and allowing Dan Koppen, Nick McDonald or Ryan Wendell to handle center.
