Coach Mike Mularkey wants QB Blaine Gabbert to look for more opportunities to run. (US Presswire) |
Michael Vick, Cam Newton, Tim Tebow, Robert Griffin III and Russell Wilson. When you think about dual-threat QBs in the NFL, those are some of the names that come to mind.
Should Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blaine Gabbert be added to that list? Probably not. But still, coach Mike Mularkey said one of the bye-week adjustments is that he would like to see Gabbert look to scramble more.
"I’d like him to run it more if he sees some place there to run,’’ Mularkey told the Florida Times-Union. “He has seen it hurt us, especially on third down. It’s really hurt us. The quarterbacks getting out of the pocket. He still has a ways to go. We know that, but I like the direction we’re going with him.”
Gabbert, though not known for his athleticism, has seen some success running the ball. He has only 13 carries for 42 yards through five weeks, but he ran for more than 400 yards in his two seasons as the starter at Missouri. He ran for 98 yards as a rookie in 2011.
Don't look for Mularkey to be dialing up many QB draws or zone reads, but he is making an effort to get Gabbert moving as much as possible. That starts at practice, where Mularkey is encouraging him to look to run, even in passing drills.
"Even in a seven-on-seven period, we want him to scramble to throw or run," Mularkey said. "We want to simulate a game as much as we can in practice, even in seven-on-seven. There are times to run, so I would not discourage him from doing that. We’re trying to promote it a little more.’’
LB Smith hoping to return: It's been a long wait for LB Daryl Smith, who has yet to see the field in 2012 with a groin injury. Sunday has been the day circled on the calendar for his return, but there's still some uncertainty about whether he will be able to go against the Raiders this week.
“I think we’re being very smart with the way we’re handling it and a lot of it is gaining confidence,” Mularkey told the Florida Times-Union. “I’m going to give him a little more on (Wednesday afternoon) and maybe a little more on Thursday and make some decisions toward the end of the week.”
Smith's return would be a huge lift for a defense that is ranked No. 29 in the NFL in total defense. The nine-year veteran is the franchise's all-time leading tackler with 673 career stops.
Defensive lineup adjustments: S Chris Prosinki will start in place of injured S Dwight Lowery against the Raiders. DE Austen Lane and DT C.J. Mosley will remain as starters after making their first starts against the Bears two weeks ago. Lane replaced rookie DE Andre Branch, while Mosley replaced Terrance Knighton.
