Jaiquawn Jarrett didn’t get the job done, so he was released. Brian Rolle didn’t get the job done either, so he was gone, replaced by Adrian Moten. But Moten apparently didn’t please, because he’s no longer with the team. And now it’s Jason Williams’ turn to try to do something special on special teams and upgrade the team's kick coverage.
Williams was signed by the Eagles this week, and even though he’s a linebacker by trade, the odds are that he’ll never see the field on defense. Coach Andy Reid made that clear on Wednesday when asked about his newest player's role.
“I’m going to try and bring in guys -- until we get it right -- that can impact you on special teams.’’ Reid said. “We’ll give this kid an opportunity and see how he does.”
Special teams -- both the return game and the coverage game -- have dragged down the Eagles all season, and they’ve lost the battle for field position in every game they’ve played. Earlier this week, Reid put a little heat on Bobby April, his specials teams coordinator, when he said, “Right now, it’s more fundamentals and technique than it is anything else. We need to make sure we work on that and do a better job coaching that during the week here.”
Williams, a former third-round draft pick of the Dallas Cowboys, said he knows why he’s here -- he said he’ll be on all four special-teams units on Sunday vs. Detroit -- and he knows what he has to do to stay here.
“I’m a special teams guy,’’ he said. “That’s what I love doing, so I’m ready to help.”
