With the news that the Giants signed linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka to a three-year contract extension worth $21.75 million, we turned our attention to defensive end Osi Umenyiora, who’s been adamant about signing a new deal for the past two years.

It’s been assumed that either the Giants were stringing along Umenyiora as he enters the last year of his contract or that they were low-balling him. He even had accused general manager Jerry Reese of being dishonest with the team's intentions.

But that’s not the story the Giants have presented. According to ESPN New York, Reese said the team has offered Umenyiora contract extensions for the past two years in order to keep him in New York for the long term.

"Our first choice with respect to Osi is that he will play for the Giants and retire a Giant," Reese said. "That is what we would like to happen. Osi has been offered an extension two years in a row now, so we would still like to make it work. Hopefully, it will work out.”

Umenyiora counters that by claiming the Giants have only offered incentives on his existing deal. He has declined to sign off on that, though. Umenyiora also has said he wants to be traded if the Giants can’t give him the extension, and there was a brief period before the 2010 season when the Giants actually were trying to do so.

"All options are open with respect to that,” Reese said.

Although one would assume the Kiwanuka signing would infuriate Umenyiora, he wrote in an email to the New York Post, “He deserves every penny. Especially all he's been through. It's a good thing … As for me, I don't know what that means, but we will see. It's a good, smart business move by the Giants. I understand it. Take care of a good player, and buy some insurance as well. Well done.”

It sounds like Umenyiora still wants to stay in New York, though it’s clear the Giants are going to have to offer him more money to do so.

“But is that going to happen? I really don't think so,” Umenyiora said last week. "I doubt it because of the situation that they have with Jason (Pierre-Paul), Justin (Tuck), Victor (Cruz) and Hakeem (Nicks) coming up (eventually). I feel like I'm one of the very good pass-rushers in the NFL; I think my statistics have proven that. Are they going to be able to pay me as such? I seriously doubt that."
