The first wave of the Jets' final roster cuts was fairly close to what has been anticipated. Most of the roster was set before training camp.
A few players, including WR Chaz Schilens and DE Jay Richardson, were surprises -- Schilens for not being cut. Schilens spent most of training camp and the preseason on the sideline, first with a hamstring injury and then with a sprained ankle. Given that he has participated almost not at all, it seemed like the Jets might release him to make room for a player with less of an injury history. However, his $1 million guaranteed salary along with his relationship with WR coach Sanjay Lal (also his coach at Oakland) may have swayed votes in his favor.
DE Jay Richardson was on the bubble, almost entirely because the defensive line is one of the areas with the most depth. Richardson has played well all through camp, but at the end of the day, it came down to numbers. It would be a surprise if he isn't picked up quickly by
another team.
Notable cuts: The Jets released two of their sixth-rround picks, OL Robert Griffin and RB Terrance Ganaway, as well as one of their seventh-round selections, WR Jordan White. The Jets are not known to cut draft picks. Griffin did not perform well, but Ganaway and White had been on the bubble. The team will likely sign both of them to the practice squad.
