Giants punter Steve Weatherford recently tweeted a picture of his locker festooned with a variety of holiday decorations. Jets kicker Nick Folk, a friend of Weatherford’s (they both played for the Jets in 2010), saw it and thought, "Hmm."
So, Folk rallied Jets punter Robert Malone and long snapper Tanner Purdum and the three put forth an effort to add some holiday cheer to the Jets locker room by decorating their own lockers.
None of the other units have joined in so far.
“We’re festive,” Malone said cheerily of his group.
The three were each left to their own devices, which produced wildly different results. Purdum’s décor consists of one string of lights and a sprig of pine on the top of his locker -- leftover decorations he had laying around his house. Folk and Malone described it as the “Charlie Brown Christmas tree.” Purdum described it as “American classic.”
They established a $50 limit for Malone and Folk, who proceeded to go shopping. Folk’s locker has a small tree in front of it, complete with lights and a present underneath, which will be added to as Christmas gets closer. He also has a string of lights around the perimeter.
Malone has lights but no tree. Instead he has a giant stocking and cardboard bells. “Nick is Christmas with the Kranks and Robert is the Griswolds from Christmas Vacation,” Purdum said.
One Jets official, who asked not to be identified because he feared revenge via practical joke, said, "They spent $50 on that?"
The lights are attached with white adhesive tape that clashes wildly with the dark wood lockers and colored lights, but Purdum noted that the tape is good because it won't leave residue and pointed out that it's a Johnson & Johnson product. Jets owner Woody Johnson’s family founded and still runs that corporation.
As Folk gave a tour of his trimmings, which he insists have outdone Weatherford’s, he sent a message cross-town. “Tell Weatherford he needs to pick up his game.”
Happy Holidays to all.
