New York Jets owner Woody Johnson issued a statement Monday morning that confirmed earlier reports that general manager Mike Tannenbaum is being let go. Johnson also confirmed that Rex Ryan will remain the head coach. 

Johnson also confirmed that the team has retained the executive search firm Korn/Ferry International, led by vice chairman Jed Hughes, to help with the search for their new general manager.

"Our 2012 season was a disappointment to all of us," Johnson said. "My goal every year as owner is to build a team that wins consistently. This year, we failed to achieve that goal.

"This morning, I informed Mike Tannenbaum that he will not return for the 2013 season. Mike devoted 15 years of service to the Jets, and I want to thank him for his hard work and dedication. Although he helped guide us to two consecutive AFC Championship games, we are not where we want to be, and a new general manager will be critical to getting this team back on the right track."

Ryan's current contract expires following the 2013 season.

"Rex Ryan will remain the head coach of our football team," Johnson said. "I believe that he has the passion, the talent, and the drive to successfully lead our team."

Prior to entering the business world, Hughes was a football coach holding various NFL defensive coaching positions with the Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers and Minnesota Vikings. Prior to that he coached in college with UCLA, Stanford and Michigan. Hughes holds a PhD from Michigan and a Masters Degree from Stanford. He completed his undergraduate work at Gettysburg College.

Tannenbaum originally joined the Jets in 1997 as the director of player contract negotiations. He later became assistant general manager and in 2006 was elevated to general manager.
