S LaRon Landry was on the field for about a half-dozen plays during Friday's Jets practice. Landry is recovering from an Achilles/heel injury suffered in 2011 with the Redskins.
He did not join the team for voluntary offseason workouts, but instead received stem cell treatments in Arizona. The team hopes Landry will start opposite Yeremiah Bell, and Landry has stated repeatedly that he will be ready to start the season. However, it is unclear how soon he will be full-go.
Although he is not on the field all the time, Landry said he is trying to keep up by taking as many mental reps as possible.
"You've got to be mentally into it," he said.
He also said he's trying to send a message to his teammates that while he may not be taking every physical rep, he is going to be a reliable member of the defense.
"It's all about being perfect," he said.
Landry also said that he's long been a big fan of coach Rex Ryan's defense. Landry's brother Dawan played safety for Ryan with the Ravens from 2006-08.
