"Really weird."

That's howJets special teams coach Mike Westhoff described having two games left to play with no possibility of making the playoffs.

"I was an avid believer until late Monday night," he said "I was very pleased with some things that happened to give us an opportunity and then it didn’t happen. You like to have that feeling of fighting to get in even if it’s remote. Sometimes you get in and the next thing
you know you’re in the AFC Championship game."

This is the 64-year-old Westhoff's 30th NFL season and his 12th with the Jets. He had spent the previous 15 years with the Miami Dolphins where he worked with Hall of Fame coach Don Shula. Westhoff, considered by many to be one of, if not the, best special teams coaches of all time plans to retire at the end of this year.

However, Westhoff will go into these last two games with no less enthusiasm or energy. "I get as excited about making the good play no matter what that is."

Sparano just focused on San Diego: Tony Sparano addressed questions about QB Tim Tebow and the fact that most people feel that the Jets plans for him (in the wildcat and other
non-specified situations) didn't work.

"Any time you look at those things it's a combination of things. I wouldn’t use the word “didn’t work," he said. "It was just predicated on what we saw (in games). He’s worked really hard out here."

Asked to assess his own performance this year, Sparano said, "It's not for me to assess. Somebody else will do that." He added that right now he was thinking only about how to beat the Chargers.

Defense coming to the end of the road: Defensive coordinator Mike Pettine pointed out that this is likely the last year this defense, especially the linebacking corp, will be
together. Linebacker Bryan Thomas has dealt with several injuries in the last two years (Achilles, shoulder, hamstring and chest) and it's unclear if after 11 years he will decide to continue playing. Linebacker Bart Scott (also in his 11th year) has been hobbled by a turf toe all year and appears to be a likely candidate to be released. Linebacker Calvin Pace is under contract, but at age 32 will be in his 11th year and is due almost $6 million.

Other question marks are players like safety LaRon Landry who was only on a one-year
contract in 2012 and CB Darrelle Revis, who has been on injured reserve most of the season after tearing his ACL is also in the last year of his deal.

Pettine did echo coach Rex Ryan in emphasizing how pleased they are with DL Quinton Coples, especially in the last half of the season. Pettine said that a lot of things clicked with Coples about halfway through the year including his technique and learning how to practice
better. "[It was] his idea of what was good enough vs. our idea what was good enough," Pettine said. Coples has 25 tackles and four sacks on the season so far. His four sacks are tied with DL Muhammad Wilkerson for most on the team.
