The Jets came into training camp with their roster pretty well set. Although they could use depth on the offensive line, especially with RT Wayne Hunter struggling. The Jets are handcuffed because their money is tied up in a handful of players -- including QB Mark Sanchez, CB Darrelle Revis and LB David Harris -- and that prevents them from pursuing marquee talent on the OL, as well as at WR, where their talent is either young, hurt or both.
Santonio Holmes (rib cartilage), Jeremy Kerley (hamstring) and Chaz Schilens (ankle) have injuries. Stephen Hill is still learning to play in an NFL offense, although the coaches are happy with his progress.
The Jets brought in Travis Baltz to compete with T.J. Conley at punter, but Baltz was sent home midway through camp with Conley the presumed winner. Conley shanked two punts in Saturday's game against the Giants, but the Jets don't seem inclined to bring in anyone else. Conley said it was a technical issue that he can fix.
The one battle this year has been at kicker. Special teams coach Mike Westhoff said that Nick Folk and Josh Brown would be judged and evaluated on their "full body of work."
The two started neck-and-neck, although as camp has progressed, Folk has pulled away. Folk has made about 95 percent of his field goals in practices, and Brown has made around 80 percent. In the first two preseason games, Brown is 2 of 2 and Folk is 1 for 1.
The Jets brought in Brown to compete with Folk because they weren't completely happy with Folk's consistency. But the two were almost identical in field goals last season with Folk making 76 percent of his attempts and Brown good on 75 percent. On kickoffs, Folk had 17 touchbacks, and Brown had 15. In preseason play, Folk is 3 for 3 on kickoff touchbacks, and Brown is 2 for 2.
Coach Rex Ryan has said that the competition will continue until Westhoff sees a winner, but Folk looks to have the edge.
