The Jets won Sunday, but it was against a Cardinals team that came into the game with the same 4-7 record as New York and had four first-time rookie starters, including Arizona QB Ryan Lindley.
A Jets QB change of their own in the third quarter now sets up a week of questions as to how the Jets will move forward. Will it be Mark Sanchez? Tim Tebow? Greg McElroy? Whoever it is, they need to decide fast to try to calm the chaos.
Offense: D+
It all finally went wrong enough for coach Rex Ryan to make a change. In the third quarter, with QB Mark Sanchez at 10 of 21 passing for just 97 yards and 3 interceptions, Ryan benched his franchise quarterback in favor of third string QB Greg McElroy, who led the team to its only touchdown. McElroy went 5 of 7, 29 yards and 1 touchdown in about a quarter and a half. Lost in the drama was RB Shonn Greene going over 100 yards, ending the day with 24 rushes for 104 yards. Defense: A
The Jets never let up on Cardinals rookie QB Ryan Lindley. The Cardinals, who have struggled with third down conversions this season, went 0 of 15 against the Jets defense. A little surprising that Lindley was sacked only twice and intercepted only once (by S LaRon Landry), but it was nonetheless the type of solid performance they’ve been looking for all year. Not one but two of K Nick Folk’s field goal attempts hit the uprights -- one from 46 yards and one from 52 yards. Then the punting return unit got burned when Arizona faked a punt and gained 40 yards on the play. P Robert Malone was solid all day. Previous game’s grade: D+
Coaching: B-
The offense barely escaped this game. Ryan making a quarterback change did give a spark, but the Jets still scored only seven points total. On the flip side, Ryan and DC Mike Pettine had a great defensive game plan for the Cardinals offense. Special teams continues to perplex. Previous game’s grade: F
