Sacks have eluded the 4-7 Jets this year, to put it mildly. With 11 games in the books, the team has a grand total of 17. LB Bryan Thomas leads the team with two-and-a-half total. LB Calvin Pace, DL Quinton Coples and LB Garrett McIntyre have two each.
Coach Rex Ryan is having a little trouble getting his mind around that. "The sack number, it’s alarming," he said, later adding the word "stunning" to describe it further.
To put it in perspective, the Denver Broncos (8-3) lead the league with 37 and there are only two teams with fewer sacks than the Jets: Jacksonville and Oakland who have just 13 each.
However, Ryan was not yet ready to concede that his defense won't end the season in the top five in the NFL. They currently sit at 19th overall. "It certainly looks that way right now," he laughed, but then added in a more serious tone. "But, I'm not willing to concede anything right now. You know what? I don’t know any different. We got five games left we better have some doozies out there on defense."
Ryan has made the point throughout the season that sacks are harder to come by when you're playing from behind. "I think we have some good pass rushers," he said. "We just have to find a way of getting them there."
