Steelers backup quarterback Byron Leftwich, already subbing for injured Ben Roethlisberger, was injured Sunday night.
While his timetable is still being examined, sources said the team expects to workout quarterbacks this week. In addition to broken ribs, Leftwich also has an injured shoulder, league sources said. He hurt his shoulder replacing Roethlisberger in the game against Kansas City and re-aggravated it when he fell in the end zone after scoring on the opening drive Sunday night.
Roethlisberger is week-to-week because of shoulder and rib injuries. He could be back this week, although sources believe next week is more likely.
Charlie Batch remains as a spot starter, but given the Roethlisberger and Leftwich injuries the Steelers would need backups.
Former Steelers quarterback Dennis Dixon is on Baltimore's practice squad. Free-agent quarterback Tyler Palko played for Steelers coordinator Todd Haley in Kansas City. Veterans like David Garrard, Josh Johnson and Seneca Wallace are also free agents.
