Lions 2011 first-round pick Nick Fairley was arrested Tuesday afternoon in Mobile, Alabama on second-degree marijuana possession charges, according to records at Mobile County Metro Jail (via the Press-Register).

The former Auburn star was held on $1,000 bail. The Mobile police, by way of the Press-Register, said that Fairley was originally stopped earlier in the afternoon because of a suspended driver's license.

A Mobile police spokesperson said that residents called authorities about a car speeding through a neighborhood several times around midday Tuesday. Authorities later spotted the car driven by Fairley.

Fairley, 24, is originally from Mobile. He committed to Auburn out of high school but after failing to qualify academically, he spent two years at Copiah-Lincoln Community College before transferring to Auburn in 2009.

Following an impressive performance in the 2011 BCS National Championship Game, Fairley decided to forego his final year of eligibility. Considered the top overall pick early in the draft-evaluation process, Fairley eventually went 13th to the Lions. He was sidelined by a foot injury early in his rookie season, but eventually played in 10 games, registering 15 tackles and one sack.

This news comes a day after Fairley's Detroit teammate, running back Mikel Leshoure, was arraigned on marijuana charges -- his second offense in as many months.

The Lions issued a statement Tuesday afternoon: "We are aware of the incident involving Nick Fairley. We hold all of our players to a high standard of behavior and the recent charges against Nick and Mikel Leshoure are not consistent with those standards. We are extremely disappointed. We will continue to gather information and will have further comment at the appropriate time."

Last week at the annual NFL meetings, Lions coach Jim Schwartz spoke of Fairley's potential.

"Nick is a very talented player, and Nick flashed everything that he needs to be an impact player in the National Football League, and he was, in spots, last year," Schwartz said according to the Detroit Free-Press. "He just wasn't consistent, and he wasn't healthy enough to be on the field enough for us."

And now he could miss time if the NFL sees fit to suspend him for violating the league's substance abuse policy.
