Backus, Leshoure and Best miss workout: OT Jeff Backus (thumb) and RB Mikel Leshoure (hamstring) were held out of Lions practice for the second day Monday. Jim Schwartz maintains that Backus' injury isn't serious, saying, “Guys have played through worse.” Backus was seen wearing a hard cast on his thumb, however, so it's safe to say that the issue requires more protection than a standard brace or bandage can provide. OTs Jason Fox and Corey Hilliard split reps in Backus' absence. Leshoure seemed no worse for wear while watching Monday's workout, and his injury has been described as minor. It's likely the team is just being cautious with a player who's vital to their 2012 plans.
Burleson a model of consistency: Whenever he's asked about his role within the Lions' WR corps, Nate Burleson usually responds with some variation of the following: “I'm just happy playing number two to Calvin Johnson.” Burleson may sit behind Johnson on the WR depth chart, but his production in camp is second to none. With the exception of a fumble Sunday, Burleson has been sure-handed in drills. His consistency gives Detroit a proven commodity it can use as a foundation toward building a deeper WR corps. More important, his strong technique serves as a solid example for Detroit's younger receivers.
Reiff clocks in for extra shifts: Jason Fox and Corey Hilliard's first-team service in relief of injured T Jeff Backus opened the door for first-round draft pick Riley Reiff to take reps at RT with both the second and third teams. Reiff responded well to the extra playing time and looks to be getting more comfortable in Detroit's offensive scheme. There's no indication that Reiff is ready to challenge for a starting spot, but Lions coaches seem pleased with his progress.
