When RB Mikel Leshoure took part in individual drills on Aug. 15 after missing nearly two weeks with a hamstring injury, Lions coach Jim Schwartz said he wouldn‘t consider the second-year player truly healthy until he took part in team drill periods. Leshoure did just that during Detroit‘s final public training camp workout Sunday, taking reps in both 7-on-7 and full team activities.
“I felt good,” he said. “Hamstring felt good. They eased me back into things, they didn’t throw me right in. I had a couple runs and play action things, and seven-on-seven went well.”
Leshoure’s last workout was run at half speed, but Sunday’s practice was an up-tempo affair. Leshoure didn’t appear bothered by the added pace, and he told reporters following the workout that he hopes to play in Detroit’s third preseason game Saturday in Oakland. The NFL suspended Leshoure for the first two games because of two offseason arrests.
“I definitely want to get my feet wet, with at least one preseason game,” he said. “I don’t want to get thrown into the fire coming back [from suspension to the regular season].”
Edwards continues to shine: Undrafted free-agent WR Patrick Edwards is looking more and more like a lock to make the roster with each passing workout. He made several outstanding catches during team drill periods Sunday, and his speed makes him a viable threat as both a slot and outside receiver. Edwards also offers added value to the special teams unit. With KR Stefan Logan sidelined by an ankle injury, Edwards handled return duties during special teams periods. Lions DBs have praised Edwards’ effort as well, claiming that his speed -- which isn’t often present in scout team receivers -- is a valuable training tool.
Rookie G/C Austin getting noticed: When G Rob Sims was asked to identify which young offensive players had surprised him during camp, he highlighted the effort of rookie G/C Rodney Austin. If Sunday’s workout is any indication, Sims’ assessment of Austin’s work ethic is shared by Detroit's coaches. After spending much of camp on the third team, the undrafed free agent from Elon University. took second team reps at RG during team drills. Austin has taken reps at guard and center during camp, and that versatility may give him an advantage as he fights for one of the final OL roster spots.
