The Lions practiced in shoulder pads during training camp Sunday. They’ll don full pads for the first time on Tuesday Morning. Here’s a look at the team’s injury news, and updates from the offensive side of the ball:
Broyles and Scott removed from injury list: Detroit removed WR Ryan Broyles (ACL) and OT Jonathan Scott (undisclosed) from the Non-Football Injury list, and both participated in practice. Broyles cut well on an ACL he says is close to full strength, and looked healthy during drills. His reps were limited, however, by a rule in the CBA prohibiting him from wearing shoulder pads – Sunday’s practice was padded -- for his first two days of practice. Broyles’ lone glaring miscue drew the ire of Jim Schwartz after the coach requested the rookie for a drill, and then had to remind him – colorfully -- to fasten his chinstrap. Broyles won’t be able to wear shoulder pads during Detroit’s padded workout Monday, so his reps will likely be limited again.
Backus, Leshoure, Coleman out for short term: OT Jeff Backus (thumb), RB Mikel Leshoure (hamstring), and S Erik Coleman (groin) were all held out of Sunday’s practice as a precautionary measure. Jim Schwartz said all three players’ injuries weren’t long-term issues, but he offered no timetable for their return. T Corey Hilliard took first-team reps for Backus, indicating he’s an early frontrunner in the reserve O-line battle. Kevin Smith and Stefan Logan handled the bulk of RB duties, and S Amari Spievey moved to the first team for Coleman. Spievey must take advantage of the reps created by Coleman’s absence to narrow the gap in the safety competition.
Logan playing well at right time: Stefan Logan’s 2011 performance as a returner paled in comparison to his Pro Bowl alternate season in 2010. That dip in production, coupled with the presence of players with kick return experience like Ryan Broyles and Titus Young led some to question Logan’s value to Detroit. His value has increased, however thanks to the Lions’ current shortage of healthy RBs. With both Mikel Leshoure and Jahvid Best out, Logan has joined the backfield rotation with positive results. He’s been effective in passing situations, and that may be enough to earn him a spot on the roster until Best and Leshoure return.
TEs quietly having good camp: They don’t command the attention of Detroit’s flashy WR corps, but the performances of TEs Tony Scheffler and Brandon Pettigrew in camp have been just as solid as their fellow receivers’ efforts. Both players have moved well across the middle, and they’re clearly on the same page with QB Matthew Stafford. The pair’s height and speed were a key component of Detroit’s passing game last season. For Detroit’s offense to excel in 2012, OC Scott Linehan will again need Scheffler and Pettigrew to control the middle of the field and draw coverage away from Detroit’s WRs.
