In essentially a must-win for both teams, the Lions lead the Cowboys 20-9 through two quarters. Both Detroit touchdowns have come on the ground -- one by Jahmyr Gibbs, one by David Montgomery -- and the hosts' defensive front has shined as well.
After the teams exchanged field goals on their opening drives and punts on their respective second series, Detroit took advantage of great field position, going 47 yards in six plays with Gibbs powering in from 1 yard away. Gibbs' 14 touchdowns scored this season are tied with Davante Adams for second-most in the NFL, only behind Jonathan Taylor's 17.
The player of the game so far, though, is Lions linebacker Jack Campbell. He had a third-down sack that helped set up Detroit's short field on its first touchdown drive. Later in the half, he made a tremendous hustle play to strip the ball from Jake Ferguson. Brian Branch recovered, setting up great field position for the offense again, and four plays later, Montgomery burst through the Dallas defense for a 35-yard touchdown.
Both teams got a field goal shortly before halftime.
The Cowboys have had a frustrating half to say the least, with penalties, turnovers and a lot of pressure allowed (Prescott has taken three sacks) hurting the offense. Still, three Brandon Aubrey field goals have kept things close, and the Cowboys do get the ball to start the third quarter.
