When news broke Friday that Giants defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka had signed a three-year contract extension for $21.75 million (with nearly $11 million of guaranteed money), it was hard not to think about defensive end Osi Umenyiora.

Umenyiora, of course, is the Giants defensive end who has wanted a new contract for the past two years -- and has battled general manager Jerry Reese in the press throughout that time -- but has not received it.

A few weeks ago, Umenyiora said he wasn’t sure if he’d show up to Giants offseason workouts -- he didn’t -- and it’s clear he still feels he’s deserving of more contract stability.

“I could see things going either way,” Umenyiora said in February. “I could see where they would want to keep me. I could see where they would want to trade me. I am going into the last year of my deal, so they might want to get some value back.

“Hopefully I’ll be able to stay here and finish out my career, but it’s a business and they’re going to do what’s best for them, and I have to try to do what’s best for me.”

Instead, Kiwanuka got was what was best for him.

But Umenyiora, at least publically, is happy for Kiwanuka. He emailed the NY Post and wrote, “He deserves every penny. Especially all he’s been through. It’s a good thing.”

Yes, but what about Umenyiora’s contract status?

“As for me, I don’t know what that means, but we will see,” he wrote. “It’s a good, smart business move by the Giants. I understand it. Take care of a good player, and buy some insurance as well. Well done.’’

Now, Umenyiora -- who’s entering the last year of his contract and will make a little less than $4 million -- can only hope that the team buys some insurance in him as well.
