Though the Ravens' brass hasn't been in contact with left tackle Bryant McKinnie since training camp opened, one fellow offensive lineman has.
Michael Oher, who's been practicing at left tackle with McKinnie absent, said he's spoken to his teammate recently.
"I just told him to take his time and we'll be here if he needs us, and things like that, and just take care of anything he has going," Oher said. "So I'm pretty sure he'll get everything squared away."
Following practice on Friday, coach John Harbaugh clarified the representative who reached out to the team on behalf of McKinnie was a chiropractor. It's not out of the question that McKinnie sustained a back injury away from the team's facility before he was expected to report to training camp.
Hypothetically, if McKinnie was injured in an activity away from the facility he could be placed on the non-football injury list and not receive a paycheck. But with his current situation, Harbaugh also stated that, "The CBA applies" to McKinnie, which means he could potentially be fined $30,000 per day.
In addition, per CBA rules, if he misses a preseason game without reporting, McKinnie could face a fine of a game check, which would be $188,255 for him.
Oher predicted McKinnie will report to camp in the near future.
"He sounds positive and like I told him, 'Take your time and we'll be waiting for you,'" Oher said.
The offensive line has done some shifting in training camp with McKinnie gone. Oher moved to left tackle and Kelechi Osemele, who returned to practice after battling back spasms, ran with the first team at right tackle. Undrafted rookie Jack Cornell out of Illinois has also seen time with the first unit at right tackle.
A timetable for McKinnie's return is still uncertain. Even without McKinnie, offensive line coach Andy Moeller is confident in the offensive linemen that reported on time.
"As far as what we have, we have enough right out here right now to be the kind of linemen we want to be," Moeller said.
