On Friday, Leshoure pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of possession, via Rapid Reporter John Kreger, and he had to pay a $575 fine. He’ll also be forced in May 2013 to prove that he participated in a treatment program.
"The prosecutor's office was very fair in how they dealt with this case," Joseph A. Lavigne, Leshoure’s lawyer, told the Detroit Free Press.
Now, the NFL will be focusing its attention on Leshoure’s attempts to keep clean. As Kreger writes, “Leshoure will initially be tested for drugs two or three times per week. The program lasts for 24 months, and is one of the reasons that Leshoure was able to avoid jail time on his latest offense.” It's still unclear if Leshoure will be suspended by the league.
The trouble began in February when Leshoure was stopped by police and cited for possession. Then, on March 12, he was a car passenger when police stopped the vehicle. Police said Leshoure was attempting to eat the marijuana in order to get rid of it.
Now that Leshoure is free of a possible jail sentence, he can look forward to a conversation with Lions receiver Nate Burleson and Nick Fairley, who also was busted this offseason for alleged possession.
“I'm just going to say tighten up,” Burleson said. “We've done too much to get to where we're at. There's been a black cloud hanging over Detroit for so long, so for us to go from 6-10 to 10-6 and feel like we're heading in the right direction and just a few mistakes happen, we've got to tell the young guys to get it together.”
Sounds like there will be plenty of interested observers making sure Leshoure does just that.
