Technically, Umenyiora apologized to women he offended, not McCoy. (US PRESSWIRE) |
On Sunday, Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora sent Eagles running back LeSean McCoy this celebratory tweet:
Happy Mothers Day Lesean Mccoy! Enjoy your special day!!
— Osi Umenyiora (@OsiUmenyiora) May 13, 2012
McCoy and Umenyiora have a history dating back to last offseason when the former mocked the latter, which prompted the latter to lash out by calling the former "a girl."
Worth mentioning: McCoy and Umenyiora are grown men calling each other names on Twitter. Old-school types like Lawrence Taylor must surely be unimpressed. (Unless you can put tweets up for auction. In which case, LT's in.) And maybe that realization explains why Umenyiora has since backed off his remarks.
After reading an espnW column by Sarah Spain, who wrote about the pervasive practice, especially in sports, of using femininity as an insult, the Giants' defensive lineman apologized.
@SarahSpainis absolutely correct in her article. I wasnt thinking about it from that perspective. I apologize to any woman offended
— Osi Umenyiora (@OsiUmenyiora) May 17, 2012
He followed with this:
@SarahSpain I always try and look at things from someone else's perspective when it's called to my attention. You article is the truth
— Osi Umenyiora (@OsiUmenyiora) May 17, 2012
As PFT's Mike Florio points out, technically, Umenyiora still didn't apologize to McCoy. We're guessing McCoy didn't notice given that shiny new five-year, $45 million contract he just signed.
