Pac-12 news and notes: UCLA's Jim Mora still hasn't settled on a QB

New UCLA coach Jim Mora insists he hasn’t settled on a starting QB, but redshirt freshman Brett Hundley might have made Mora's decision easier with a sharp performance Tuesday, Janis Carr of the Orange County Register reported.

Arizona State sophomore Taylor Kelly isn't going away in the quarterback race, Doug Haller of the Arizona Republic reported. Entering preseason practice, most analysts probably placed Kelly behind sophomore Mike Bercovici and redshirt-freshman Michael Eubank, but through five days that hasn't been the case. Kelly has worked first with the first-team for two of the past three days.

In case you missed the report earlier, Colorado WRs Jeffrey Thomas and DaVaughn Thornton have been suspended for the Buffaloes' first two games of the 2012 season following a weekend incident that involved the cops, guns and an air pistol, but the suspensions shouldn’t impact the team’s depth.

Oregon State defensive coordinator Mark Banker's defense gave up 197 rushing yards per game last season -- 101st in the nation. It came in start contrast to 2007, when the Beavers led the nation in run defense, allowing 71 yards a game. Banker is determined to right ship this season, John Hunt of the Oregonian reported.

Cal sophomore cornerback Stefan McClure, who suffered a major injury to his right knee Nov. 25 against Arizona State, is not as close to being ready to play as originally expected, Jeff Faraudo of the San Jose Mercury News reported. A consensus top-10 cornerback prospect as a high school senior in Southern California, McClure played in 11 games as a freshman last fall, starting twice. But coach Jeff Tedford conceded it's possible McClure could wind up redshirting this season.

Bum knees have sidelined RB Deontae Cooper’s hopes of building on a brilliant prep career for the past two seasons. When Washington opened its fall training camp Monday, Cooper was back in action, at nearly full health for the first time in two years. Instead of the red jerseys worn by injured players, Cooper wore purple. His excitement could hardly be contained, Kevin Dowd of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported.

Utah DE Nate Fakahafua was a utility player for the Utes last year, seeing time at defensive end, linebacker and on special teams. He finished with just four tackles, but he must have a much bigger impact this year as a starter. Behind him are two inexperienced players in junior Thretton Palamo and freshman Hunter Dimick, Lya Wodraska of the Salt Lake Tribune reported.
