The Packers signed DT Jordan Miller to the active roster from their practice squad and released LB Vic So’oto, general manager Ted Thompson announced Tuesday.
Miller (6-foot-1, 309 pounds) is a first-year player out of Southern University who was signed to the practice squad on Oct. 23. He entered the league last year as an undrafted free agent with Chicago, spent the first 15 games of 2011 on the Bears’ practice squad and was signed to the their 53-man roster for the season-finale, though he was inactive.
The 24-year-old defensive tackle played in 31 games in three seasons (2008-10) at Southern and finished his career with 90 tackles, 18 sacks and 30 tackles for loss.
Miller adds depth to the depleted defensive line, which had only four active players in last week’s win over the Lions. With DEs C.J. Wilson (knee) and Mike Neal (shoulder) out for an uncertain amount of time -- possibly with the severity of their injuries either unknown or worsening -- the Packers clearly felt they needed to make a move.
So’oto, an outside linebacker that has rarely been able to get on the field for the Packers. A preseason sensation in 2011, So’oto made the 2011 53-man roster as an undrafted free agent. He wasn’t a contributor on special teams, however, and he rarely get playing time on defense.
This season, he was released off injured reserve on Sept. 25 and signed by the Raiders, with whom he was active for four games. The Packers re-signed So’oto on Nov. 12 and he appeared in one game with the team.
With OLB Clay Matthews expected back this week, there was a surplus of outside linebackers and So’oto was the odd man out.
