There aren't many forces in the NFL that have the ability to slow the New England Patriots' offense, but they may meet their match when they come against the replacement officials Sunday afternoon in Tennessee.
The Patriots employed their hurry-up offense on 22 percent of their offensive snaps last season, but left it on the shelf throughout the preseason. There's a growing concern that the constant huddling and delays that came to define the performance of the replacements during exhibition games will negatively impact the New England offense.
Bill Belichick isn't concerned, though. He said the Patriots his will deal with whatever challenges are presented and adjust accordingly to overcome them.
"There isn't anything we can do about that. Whatever it is, it is," he said. "We will do our best to play within the rules. However they are calling the game then we will have to adapt to that. We just have to focus on our execution and going out there and doing the things that we are able to do."
The top replacement officials are scheduled to handle the prime-time games this week, leaving the rest of the pack to handle the Sunday afternoon slate, including New England's game against the Titans.
Shiancoe out: The Patriots placed TE Visanthe Shiancoe on injured reserve with the designation that he can return this season. He can begin practicing in three weeks and is eligible to return to game action in eight weeks. Tight end Michael Hoomanawanui, who caught eight passes for 83 yards last season for the Rams, was signed to take his place.
Updated practice squad roster: In another move, the Patriots signed WR Kenny Taylor to the practice squad and released WR Sam Kirkland. Taylor is on his third stint with the Patriots after being released Friday.
Chung getting healthy: S Patrick Chung (shoulder) has been cleared for full contact and shed the red jersey he's worn in practice throughout the week. He was a full participant Wednesday.
The rest of the practice report is as follows: OL Nick McDonald (shoulder) and RB Shane Vereen (foot) did not participate; TE Daniel Fells (shin), CB Sterling Moore (knee) and OT Sebastian Vollmer (back) were limited.
