The Patriots announced that WR Julian Edelman has been placed on injured reserve, ending his season.

Boston news station WBZ had reported that the Patriots wide receiver broke his foot and will likely require surgery.

Edelman was seen leaving Sun Life Stadium on Sunday on crutches and in a walking boot.

The seriousness of the situation also came into focus Monday night when news broke that New England was nearing a deal to bring back WR Donte’ Stallworth, a move that was confirmed by the team Tuesday.

Edelman was hurt during the fourth quarter of Sunday’s win over the Dolphins. His absence left the Patriots with just three active receivers. While Stallworth may be able to fill Edelman's spot in the passing game, the biggest hurdle may be replacing Edelman on special teams, where he’s scored two touchdowns this season.
