The Patriots' offense continues to sputter under a myriad of blocking issues with a line that doesn't have starters at four spots (LG Logan Mankins, C Dan Connolly, RG Brian Waters and RT Sebastian Vollmer) in their projected positions.
At one point during a situational overtime period, there were three sacks in six plays by Dont’a Hightower, Jermaine Cunningham and Chandler Jones (split), and Trevor Scott. There were another five tackles for a loss by the defense as the offense couldn’t get out of its own way. At one point, the offense was so bad that Jerod Mayo openly mocked them by asking for the punt team on third down. Later, QB Tom Brady –- who was 13 of 23 with five sacks total in team periods -- just shrugged at offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.
Ebner getting a look: Nate Ebner, a safety who was drafted in the sixth round better known for his rugby exploits, has been getting a big look of late. When Tavon Wilson went out with an injury, Ebner took his spot in sub packages. Ebner has two INTs and a few pass breakups in recent practices.
Vereen's big chance: Shane Vereen got to carry the load at RB on Wednesday after Stevan Ridley fumbled in Tuesday's practice. The two were sharing time on Thursday until Vereen left with a hamstring injury. This could be Vereen's chance to take the job permanently if Ridley misses extended time.
